About The Event

Come join us and learn Ulana Lau Niu, the Hawaiian ancient art of weaving coconut fronds. In this fun, creative and cultural workshop, you will be taught how to make your very own Hawaiian Coconut Hat (or Papale Niu). Feel immersed into the Coco world as you learn the basics of the plant, it’s significance to the islands and how to care for your hat which can last up to 20+ years!

All instructions and supplies are included in this workshop. Wear your Papale right away, gift it or take it home!

It is a great opportunity to shine a light on this important skill from the past. One you can share and help perpetuate for future generations.

All are welcome, from crafty beginners to weaver pros.

All materials are included and class will be held at Friends & Faire at 1980 Main st. #4 Wailuku, HI 96793 (Behind Native Intelligence- free parking available). Classes are generally for ages 18 years and older but you may also register your children (10 years and older) and create a hat with them. BYO beer or wine (ages 21 and over) to sip on and enjoy while you get creative!

Artist's Bio: Born and raised in Tahiti, Leilani Pearson learned the art of weaving at a young age. She moved to Hawaii to study at the University of Hawaii, fell in love with the islands, and made it her home. She now resides in Maui and has found her passion in farming Gardenias, hosting workshops and crafting Specialty Leis and Hakus, combining Traditional techniques from the old to the Modern.
