Surely there is an endless supply of toilet paper rolls in your household that can be used to spend time creating with the kids on these recent quarantine days! Here are two different ways to make colorful and crafty fish to entertain your keiki for an hour or two. Make a bunch to create a brilliant pennant banner by threading some string through each fish or construct just a couple and stage a fun play! You could also create one to represent each male in the family to celebrate the Japanese tradition of Boys' Day coming up on May 5th. Just insert a chopstick to the paper roll and secure with tape or glue to create a mini Koinobori flag to decorate your home. It is definitely a fun craft that may get you and your family hooked!
Carp or Koi Fish
Materials needed:
toilet paper roll
orange acrylic paint and paint brush
paint pens or markers
plastic googly eyes
orange felt fabric
glue
scissors
Instructions:
Crease both ends of toilet paper roll (pressing it flat).
Paint outside of roll orange (or whatever color you want) and let dry. If you do not have paint, color with an orange marker.
Draw fish scales across the top with a paint pen or marker.
Draw a fin and a tail shape similar to the picture above on thick or heavy paper and cut out to use as a template.
Trace template onto felt fabric or any stiff material (you could use painted paper bags, left over fabric, cereal boxes, card-stock paper, etc.) and cut out 2 fins and 1 tail.
Glue fins to the underneath of the paper roll according to picture and the tail to the inside end of the roll. Press the top of the roll to the bottom, flattening the tube and sandwiching the tail.
Glue on googly eyes or draw in the fish's eyeballs at the top end of the paper roll.
Let fish dry before playing and ENJOY!
